Elizabeth Lemons & Henry Carter

 

c. 1810: Elizabeth Lemons was born in Rockingham County, NC.

22 Jan 1838: Elizabeth married Henry Carter.[1]

1850 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Overseer age 33, born in NC, with real estate valued at $300; Elizabeth 40, born NC; Johanna 11; James 9; Franklin 3; Missouri F. 3 months.  they were listed next to M. S. and Lucy Carter.[2]

When Elizabeth's father James signed his will on 9 Aug 1855, he effectively cut Henry Carter out of any portion of the estate, allowing him only to retain possession of a bed and livestock previously given to him.  See Will of James Lemons

1860 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Elizabeth, Elizabeth Carter, aged 52, born NC, who can't read or write was enumerated in the household of Joannah Lemons.  Elizabeth claimed her real and personal property was worth $1,000 and $1,500 respectively.[3]  But where are her children?

George Washington Lemons & Nancy Sims

 

This George is not to be confused with George Washington Lemonds, the son of James and Nancy Brickey Lemonds.  That George married Matilda Hopkins and died in Ohio.

c. 1813: George was born in Rockingham County, NC.

3 Jul 1835: George W. Lemons and James Sims witnessed a deed from William Fanning to James Roberts and James Garrett on the west side of Cave Branch crossing Lick Fork Creek.[4]

Nov 1835: Along with Thomas H. Garrett, George W. Lemond witnessed a division of the lands of James Roberts and James Garrett near Lick Fork Creek.[5]

1840 Census, Rockingham County, NC: George W. Lemmons was listed with 2 males 10-15, 2 40-50; 1 female 5-10, 1 10-15, 2 30-40.[6]

3 Dec 1840: Was among the commissioners laying off the dower lands of Ann C. Adams, widow of Alexander P. Adams, on Matrimony Creek adjoining Jesse Harris.  Other Commissioners: Pryor Reynolds, Robert and John Strong, James Dillard, Jesse and Jerry Hopper, Drury Price, Clement Nancy, John Robertson, Tilghman Coleman, and Thomas Pratt.  [Book 2L, p. 194]

27 Sep 1843: George W. Lemonds sold 412 acres on the waters of Lickfork Creek to Samuel Vernon for $600.  This land adjoined James Roberts, Nathaniel Dodd, Hugh Frazier, Thomas Prier, and William H. Prier.  Witnesses: Henry Claybrook, Henderson Joyce, and Tyre Carter.[7]  Lick Fork Creek joins Buffalo Island Creek from the south.  For creek locations, see Relevant Water Courses in Rockingham County.

12 Nov 1849: Indebted to Noah Joyce for $200, George W. Limons sold 240 acres to John Joyce for $1.00 in a trust deed.  The mortgaged land adjoined William Webb and Nathaniel Dodd.  The witness was Thomas H. Sneed.[8]

9 Sep 1850 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Farmer Washington Lemond 37, born in NC, with real estate valued at $600; Nancy age 40, born in NC; laborer Thomas age 23; Ann 18; Elizabeth 16.[9]   Is Ann George and Nancy's daughter or Thomas' wife?  And who is Thomas?  He's too old to be George's son.

21 Aug 1852: He sold 103 3/4 acres on the waters of Buffalo Island Creek adjoining Web to William Combs for $380.  Witnesses: Tyre and Benjamin (x) Carter.[10]

20 Aug 1858: He sold 115 acres on waters of Lick Fork Creek to Thomas Lemons for $200.  Witnesses: Peter Scales and Nathaniel H. Dodd.[11]  Thomas is no doubt the man who was enumerated with the family in 1850.

26 Feb 1859: Indebted to Jesse Sims of Missouri for $200, George sold 325 acres crossing Lick Fork Creek adjoining Wilford Carter and John Field, plus 1 bay mare, household and kitchen furniture to James M. Lemons for $1.00 in a deed of trust.  George's debt fell due 1 Aug 1859.  Witness: Thomas (x) Lemons.[12] Once again, mysterious Thomas.

Lucy Jane Lemons & Melchisidack S. Carter

 

c. 1815: Melchisidack Carter was born in North Carolina, probably in Rockingham County.

c. 1820: Lucy was born in Rockingham County, NC.

3 May 1838: Lucy Jane Lemons married Melchisidack Carter.[13] 

1850 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Farmer M. S. Carter 33, born in NC, with real estate valued at $212; Lucy age 30, born in NC; James W. 10; George S. 9; Sarah M. 7; Margaret 4; Louisa 2.  They were listed next to Henry and Elizabeth [nee Lemons, Lucy's sister] Carter.

The family reportedly moved to Obion County, TN c. 1861.

17 Jun 1870 Census, Obion County, TN (District 13, Union City P.O.): Farmer M. S. Carter 55, born NC, with real and personal property valued at $800 and $200; Lucy J. age 45, born NC; Melburan, male aged 7, born TN.  The family was enumerated next to James W. Carter 30, wife Matilda Carter and children.

16 Jun 1880 Census, Obion County, TN (District 2): Farmer Melcheidek S. Carter 65, born NC; wife Hester Ann 47, born TN; nephews Powel P. and Lucian K. Marshall, ages 9 and 1.[14]

James M. Lemons & Ann Roberts

 

22 Nov 1847: James M. Lemons married Ann Roberts with Henry (x) Carter as bondsman and John P. Grogan as witness.[15]

28 Aug 1850 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Farmer James Lemond Jr age 25, born NC, with real estate worth $1,400; Ann 25, born NC; Drury M. 1 month, born NC.[16]

10 Feb 1853: Along with Tyre Carter, James M. Lemons witnessed a deed from [father] James Lemons to Granville Price.[17]

26 Feb 1859: Indebted to Jesse Sims of Missouri, George W. Lemons mortgaged personal property and land to James M. Lemons for $1.00.  Thomas (x) Lemons witnessed the deed of trust.[18]

24 Jun 1859: He purchased 80 acres on the waters of Buffalo Island Creek adjoining Thomas Pratt from the Clerk of Equity Court for $705.  It was described as the parcel assigned to the children of Pleasant Lemons.[19]  For creek locations, see Relevant Water Courses in Rockingham County.

9 Jan 1860: He sold 90 acres on the waters of Buffalo Creek to James Morgain for $580.  It was described as Lot #7 from the estate of "my father" James Lemon.  Witness: B. S. Roberts.[20]

1860 Census, Rockingham County, NC: Farmer James M. Lemons age 33, born NC, with real and personal property  worth $1,300 and $2,000 respectively; Ann 29; Drury 11; Margaret 9; Richard 7; Pryor 5; Lora 2.  Enumerated next to them were [mother] Joannah Lemons and [sister] Elizabeth Carter.[21]

1870 Census, Leaksville, Rockingham County, NC: Farmer J. M. Lemons 50, with real and personal property worth $150 and $100 respectively; Annie 40; Drury 21; Margaret 18; Dick 16; Puss 12; Pryor 11; Clara 10; Eliza 2.[22]
